Fact

A general truth about the topic that is widely known or accepted. Does not include specific numbers from research or a named source.

Signals: no "for example," no source, no percentages

Statistic

A specific number, percentage, or research finding, usually from a named study, institution, or survey.

Signals: %, numbers, "According to X," "A study found," researcher names

Example

A specific case or situation that illustrates the supporting idea. Usually introduces a particular place, event, person, or scenario.

Signals: "For example," "For instance," "Such as," a specific event or place

Explanation

Defines a term, describes a process, or adds further detail to develop what the supporting idea means. No new example or data.

Signals: "This means," "This refers to," "In other words," definitions, mechanisms
