What makes a strong topic sentence?

✓ Uses prompt language

A strong topic sentence reflects the key words and direction of the writing prompt. If the prompt says "benefits," your TS should mention benefits.

✓ Introduces — doesn't prove

A topic sentence states the main idea of the paragraph. It does not give specific details, examples, or evidence. Those come later.

✗ Not too vague

Avoid sentences like "Exercise is important." This tells the reader almost nothing and gives no direction for the rest of the paragraph.

✗ Not too specific

Avoid jumping straight into details or examples. If a sentence reads like evidence (a statistic, a specific name, a personal story), it is not a topic sentence.

Common topic sentence patterns

List pattern — "There are several..." Prompt: How might students experience culture shock? → There are several ways students at BYU-Hawaii experience culture shock.

Reasons pattern — "...because of..." Prompt: Why is a college degree worth the time and money? → A college degree is worth pursuing because of the career opportunities and higher earning potential it provides.

Focus pattern — "Although there are many..., the most important is..." Prompt: How might students experience culture shock? → Although there are many ways students experience culture shock, perhaps the most common challenge is finding food that is affordable and familiar.
